On August, 24th the feast of watermelons – always attended by many vendors – was held on the Tiber Island. During the day, goliardic swimming competitions were held, in which the participants tried to grab the sweet summer fruit that the spectators threw into the river. The game was banned in 1870 due to incidents caused by Tiber’s strong current.
