The so-called Cordonata, the wide staircase leading from Aracoeli to Capitolium Square, is decorated by two Egyptian lions. When, in 1587, Aqua Felix was conducted on the Capitoline Hill, the lions turned into fountains. According to oral tradition, on the occasion of special celebrations, from their mouths gushed wine instead of water.
