THE MIDDAY CANNON
One of the must do things in Rome is to listen out for the midday cannon shooting from the top of the Gianicolo Hill. Since 1847, on the order’s of Pius IX, a special canon fires blanks at noon on the hour. The Pope wanted to impose a standard on the church bells of Rome because until then, each sounded at random, creating uncertainty and confusion. The cannon was not always situated on the hill: at first it was placed in Castel Sant’Angelo, then it was transferred to Monte Mario.
