There are over 900 churches in the city of Rome, but this one is far different from all the others. Built by Andrej Obolenskij on the grounds of the Russian embassy to the Vatican, the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria is the city’s first Russian Orthodox place of worship in almost a thousand years. The sanctuary is unapologetically Russian in its architecture, with a massive onionshaped dome covered in turquoiseblue porcelain.
