Formerly known as Piazza Esedra, this semi-circular square owes its name to the large exedra of the neighbouring Baths of Diocletian. The porticos around the piazza, built in 1887–98 by Gaetano Koch, were in memory of the ancient buildings on the same sites. The adjacent Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs was built by Michelangelo using the warm bathroom of the Roman baths as a wing for its spacious Greek cross plan.
