Listed as one of the main events of the 2017 archaeological season in Rome, “The Moon Above the Colosseum” is a superb guided tour through the monument enlighten by a captivating, charming atmosphere. Visitors will walk through the oval amphitheatre, reaching its most important spots, including the mysterious underground levels. An attractive lighting system will give greater emphasis to the basements, tunnels and interior arches of the Colosseum: a magical atmosphere that will spread across the cavea of the amphitheatre.

The courses – organized in groups led by an archaeologist – include a visit to the permanent exhibition which gathers artefacts found in the excavations, as well as a section devoted to the history of the Colosseum’s valley and the recent findings. The topics range from the monument’s architecture, with its rich array of marble furnishings, to the technical operations that allowed the lifting of humans and animals from the basement floor of the shows.

The visit will take place in the undergrounds, where gladiators and wild animals waited before appearing in front of the public in competitive games and bloody hunts. Visitors will walk where munera and venationes took place, having a great view over the hypogeum and the depths of the amphitheatre. The tour, available in English, Spanish and Italian, also includes the exhibition “Colosseum. An icon“.
