Internazionali d’Italia 2018, Fiumicino comes alive with the world’s greatest tennis stars
The countdown for the 75th Internazionali BNL d’Italia, one of the world’s most prestigious tennis tournaments, has finally started. From May 7-20, some of the biggest names in sports will be coming to duke it out on the courts of the historic Foro Italico with a full schedule of singles and doubles draws played on clay surface. Promoted by the Italian Tennis Federation (FIT) and the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), the competition will turn the Eternal City into a pole of attraction for sport lovers and professional tennis players such as U.S. sensation Serena Williams, Spain’s Rafal Nadal, Serbian Novak Djokovic, Canadian Milos Raonic, Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, Stan Wawrinka from the Swiss Confederation and top Italian players Fabio Fognini, Andreas Seppi, Paolo Lorenzi, Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani.
Like the 2017 edition, the tournament will be a “combined event”, with men and women competing on the same day. The first matches are scheduled for May 5 with a series of prequalifying draws, with men’s and women’s qualifying events taking place on May 12- 13, in addition to the first round of men’s main draw matches. Events will alternate between day and night sessions: the first matches are scheduled to start at 11:00 am at multiple venues (Next Gen Arena, Nicola Pietrangeli Stadium, secondary courts), with additional sessions scheduled for 12:00 am. Just like night competitions (scheduled at 7:30 pm), the finals and semi-finals will be played on the Centre Court – the one with the largest seating capacity – which, in the opinion of players and staff alike, is judged to offer spectators the best view of play in the world.
The event will see a busy schedule of sport-related activities taking place at different locations throughout the city. During their stay at the Leonardo da Vinci airport, world tennis legends will have the opportunity to meet their fans in designated areas provided by Aeroporti di Roma within the Arrivals Hall of Terminal 3.
