Explora is the first non-profit and privately owned permanent museum entirely conceived for children aged 3-12, schools and families. It offers visitors an opportunity to play, experiment and learn in the field as well as occasions for socialization and education with the aim to promote the development of children’s cognitive and emotional capacities.
The museum is located in an area of 8000 sqm which was once occupied by a former tram depot, in the heart of Rome midway between Villa Borghese and Piazza del Popolo. It consists of an outstanding exhibit pavilion, a free-access green area which includes a well-equipped playground, a kitchen dedicated to food education workshops, a cafeteria, a bookshop, a restaurant and a parking area.
The idea behind Explora is to represent the city, its main buildings and services, as an enormous toy that children can use, watch, touch and discover independently through play and socializing. The representation is emphasized by its interior scenery, with corridors and spaces looking like real roads, pedestrian crossings, a traffic light, plants and greenery. The primary goal of Explora is to encourage and help the natural desire to learn of every child, fostering a well-disposed attitude towards culture, cooperation and respect for the environment.
