A fascinating journey through time designed for the visitors of the Domus Aurea, one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites. The experience begins with a video story that explores the monument’s original setting and illustrates its glorious history with the support of 3D reconstruction images. The guided tour goes on with a special visit to the Golden Vault Room where a site specific installation in augmented reality will allow an unprecedented immersive space experience. Thanks to a special oculus rift it will be possible to admire the splendor of the ancient room built by Emperor Nero after the big fire of 64 A.D. The new residence was named Domus Aurea (the Golden House) because of its marbles and vaults decorated with gold and precious stones.
When Nero died, his successors tried to erase his memory (damnatio memoriae) by demolishing his huge palace. The luxurious halls were filled with soil and the lavish decorations remained hidden until the Renaissance when some artists with a passion for antiquity (including Pinturicchio and Raphael) descended from above in what they thought were caves (“grotte” in Italian) discovering the decorative motifs that adorned the vaults (for this reason the decorations were called “grotesque“). What they saw in the Domus Aurea became a model for the artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, influencing the development of the arts around the world. The site is accessible only by didactic tour with reservation required.
