ARNOLFO DI CAMBIO’S CRIB

Preserved in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, it is one of the oldest nativity scenes of the world. It was sculpted by the famous Tuscan artist in 1291, at the behest of Pope Niccolò IV. The group, characterized by the touching beauty of simplicity, is composed of eight statuettes: the Madonna and Child in the center, St. Joseph, the donkey and the ox, and the three Magi, one of whom is kneeling.
